Environment sits second, after governance and strategy, in terms of overall company performance, reflecting the maturity of topics in this measurement area. The top ten companies in this dimension consist primarily of food processors and manufacturers, including Danone, Unilever, Nestlé and Kellogg’s as well as beverage companies Molson Coors, Anheuser-Busch InBev, PepsiCo and Diageo. Among the top ten are also agricultural inputs company OCP (six) and food retailer Tesco (ten).

Disclosure on reducing direct and indirect (scope 1 and 2) greenhouse gas emissions is relatively high, with 65% of companies reporting on their actions, including time bound targets and reductions. In comparison, only 40% of companies report on their other indirect value chain (scope 3) emissions. Furthermore, there is also high disclosure on reducing plastic use and packaging waste, and food loss and waste, where 60% of companies provide disclosure on each topic. On animal welfare, while 50% provide disclosure on animal welfare standards, only 18 companies demonstrate leading practices on this topic through extensive target setting and verification processes. Furthermore, 70% of companies do not disclose activities to reduce antibiotics use, highlighting a general lack of disclosure on the topic. Similarly, few companies are adequately addressing deforestation, with no company reporting a 100% deforestation-free supply chain for their high-risk commodities. While around 50% of companies disclose evidence of actions on improving soil health and agrobiodiversity, and optimising fertiliser and pesticide use, around 60% of companies assessed were unable to evidence reductions in water use across their own operations.
