The company is also ahead of industry peers on violence and harassment and compensation and benefits. However, the company lags behind on governance and strategy and health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Adidas displays leading practice in enabling freedom of association and collective bargaining in the supply chain. The company provides trainings to its suppliers and supervisors on freedom of association and collective bargaining and goes a step further to identify parallel means for worker representation through direct worker-led elections in countries with barriers to the formation of trade unions. For example, together with Oxfam, the company collaborated closely with local trade union federations in the development of a Freedom of Association Protocol for Indonesia. The company also has a non-discrimination policy that explicitly protects both pregnant and married women workers, as well as prohibits pregnancy testing, and encourages its suppliers to provide maternity leave benefits and offer production schedules with reduced working hours for pregnant or lactating workers.

However, the company should consider a more strategic approach to gender equality in its own operations, for example, by establishing gender-balanced representation (between 40-60%) across all levels of leadership. Moreover, while the company requires its suppliers to address and monitor the specific health, safety and hygiene needs of their women workers, it fails to provide gender-responsive health information and services for its own women employees by ensuring coverage regarding maternal, sexual and reproductive, and mental health.
