Gap Inc. ranks first in this year’s Gender Benchmark, with a score of 53.9 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 14 out of 34 indicators and is the strongest performing company on governance and strategy. However, it has considerable room for improvement in compensation and benefits.

Gap has a strong gender strategy and is one of only three companies to make a strong commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment in the supply chain, by ensuring a gender needs assessment is undertaken with respect to supply chain workers. It has also set clear, measurable and timebound targets to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, committing to 100% of its tier 1 suppliers having transitioned to digital wage payments by 2020 and reaching 1 million women through its program P.A.C.E. by 2022. Gap also commits to gender-responsive procurement and has launched a supplier inclusion programme that provides a framework to increase its work with companies that are owned by, or employ, a large percentage of minorities, including women.

However, the company discloses limited evidence regarding its global gender pay gap or employees’ fair compensation beyond ensuring equal pay for equal work. Moreover, it does not offer at least 14 weeks of paid primary carer leave, as recommended by the ILO, or at least two weeks of paid secondary carer leave to all employees globally. There is no evidence to suggest Gap ensures that supply chain workers are provided with a living wage or family-friendly benefits. Furthermore, while Gap offers women’s empowerment programmes in the supply chain and community, it fails to provide the same professional development opportunities for women working in its own operations.
